ANERSAAQ EP

The opening track, Anernerit, meaning “your breath,” sets a contemplative tone. It’s a calming, almost meditative piece that questions whether we remember to chase our dreams amidst the chaos of life. Behind the deep electronic percussion lies a heartbeat of traditional drum beats, softly layered with choral elements that evoke a sense of spiritual grounding. The track feels like a gentle reminder to reconnect with one’s inner self and ancestral roots, a sonic meditation on mindfulness and aspiration.

Soorunami siuligut—“Our ancestors ofcourse”—takes a more defiant stance. It begins with a traditional drum song that abruptly morphs into a powerful, hard-rock rhythm. Repetitive questions like “Who is it we are following?” resonate throughout, serving as a critique of the societal disconnect from Greenlandic cultural practices and values, which are often overshadowed by Western paradigms. This track feels like a call to reclaim identity and cultural integrity, blending raw, primal energy with a deep sense of cultural pride.

In Naggueqatigut, translating to “Our kinsmen,” VARNA GL explores the collective spirit of the Inuit across the Arctic. The track is a meditative masterpiece—an intertwined blend of soft vocals, drumming and breath inspired by memories with her fellow Indigenous kinsmen, layered with her own vocalizations. It’s a soothing, almost sacred soundscape that transports listeners to a space of reflection and unity. The electronic elements woven into traditional drumming and singing, creating a harmonious dialogue between past and present and connection between Indigenous peoples across the Arctic.

Digippaa, meaning “It arrived at…” is a more visceral experience. Opening with the howling of Greenlandic sled dogs, it immediately immerses the listener in the Arctic wilderness. The track’s electronic bass is deep and pulsating, punctuated by abrupt breaks and jagged sonic textures. Varna GL’s vocals—vast, emotional, and charged—intensify the narrative of arrival and the underlying suspisciosion on the intentions from outside. It’s a powerful statement on movement, change, and the arrival of renewed attention on Greenland, given the geopolitical tensions.

Finally, NIVI, a sprawling 13-minute chant, acts as the album’s spiritual centerpiece. Rich with sounds of nature, traditional drumming, and singing, all layered within expansive electronic soundscapes, this piece offers an immersive meditative experience. It encapsulates the essence of Greenland’s sacred landscapes and ancestral voices, inviting listeners into a deep state of reflection and reverence.

ANERSAAQ is more than just an album; it’s a sonic reclamation of Greenlandic identity. VARNA GL masterfully bridges the ancient and the modern, creating a compelling narrative of cultural resilience.

This EP invites us to listen, reflect, and honor the enduring spirit of the Arctic’s indigenous communities—an essential addition to contemporary world music that challenges and enriches our understanding of heritage and innovation.
