Anthems of GReenland
"Kalaallit Nunaat, Kalaallit pigaat" means "Kalaallit Nunaat is owned by Kalaallit" (Kalaallit is Inuit of Greenland, our land is also called Kalaallit Nunaat or Nunarput (Our land)
This song was made during the visit of JD Vance in March 2025, to voice up the urgent opinion, that we will not let go of the land of our ancestors or the hope for our children to continue our way of life after us (Why I added the drum singing and the beat of our drum).
My lifes work is devoted to drum dancing and drum singing. I am currently working with fulltime on a documentary series about drum dancing and drumsinginging called "The forbidden Songs".
The chanting children, are my two sons. Their future is at stake and they are the ones that keep me resisting and fighting for a better future for Greenland. So I asked them if they wanted to sing this part, which we had a lot of fun doing.
"Nunarpununa" (meaning: It is our land") was released January 10th 2026, after the President of US had announced a 20days notice, for what he would do about Greenland.
I read a friends post on Facebook, let´s meet within 20 days. It felt weird, so I called her. She told me about the 20 Days notice. It felt like a doomsday message. That made me very anxious and this time it felt different. I started to follow all the news a lot (which I normally do sporadically) and fell over a voice of a speech, that contained everything I was currently feeling. It was nothing like the usual "one sided political party"- message. I am not of a certain political party nor had this anything to do about supporting any political party. This was bigger than me. The voice gave me a sudden feeling of a "Greenlandic Martin Luther King". A voice that united everyone and reminded me of the pride of our ancestors and all they did, for us, our children and grandchildren to be here. The voice of late Hans Enoksen, who passed away in September 2025, suddenly had a different weight and gave me the strength that I needed. So I contacted his widow and asked if it was ok that I used this specific speech in a song. I had already been working on a number of songs, so I knew exactly which song I wanted to use for this speech.
She agreed.
I went into a hyper focussed mode and worked until the song was done and after that I continued on the video aswell. I sent it to a couple of friends, and they urged me to release it immediately. Which I did.
Whenever I create. I just start intuitively. I do what I feel I need, to let go of. For me, drumdancing and drumsinging are essential part of me, so I don't think about it, it just comes as it wants to.
A lot of people have resonated with the songs. It means a lot to me, that they connect to the messages. Which are spiritual, connected to our land, our ancestors and our way of life and how we relate as Inuit. I am not so much of a political oriented person and protest songs has never been something I thought to do. My intention is to connect to the essence of life, and right NOW the pressure is creating RESISTANCE. So that is what I feel a lot at the moment and tune into.
